Would I need to pass my driving test in a manual car before I could drive an automatic....?

I was curious as to whether I would need to drive a manual car before I could drive an automatic? Or does it not matter? To be honest, I just want a car to get from A - B, but I won't continuously use my car to go to short distances or places I could get to otherwise by foot. Would an automatic car be suitable enough?
